Spring Is in the Air

The winter chill is finally beginning to lift here in Pittsburgh. So that means I've been looking back through my photo albums to remember the cheerful spring flowers that will soon be here to boost our spirits. I am not a huge fan of winter. However, as I learn more about growing flowers, I have come to appreciate how necessary it is. Did you know that daffodils, tulips, crocus, and peonies all require chilling hours to bloom? Ideally they get 10-15 weeks of time in the ground with temperatures around or below 40 degrees. Thankfully, a cold winter brings with it the promise of beautiful blooms.

Daffodils are some of the first flowers to bloom in our garden each spring. We have plenty of the classic trumpet daffodils, along with many other fancy varieties. One of my favorite varieties from last season is pictured above.

I love displaying a bunch of daffodils together en masse. Daffodil stems contain a sap that is toxic to other flowers, so you often see them grouped together on their own in arrangements and bouquets. Put them all together and wow! An instant spring boost!
